Participant Information


Did you attend a drawing bar or collection tour in Fall 2015? If yes, the U of L Art Gallery invites you to submit for a curated exhibition as part of our drawing series.

Follow the information below:

Works from the Drawing Bar is the latest in our art + people = x series that connects local artists and audiences with the U of L’s renowned art collection.
To be eligible to submit to the exhibition, artists must have attended at least one of the following:
– a collection tour (October 22 & 24, 2015),
– the Saturday Drop In & Draw event (October 24, 2015),
or
– a Drawing Bar between September and November, 2015

Artists of all levels, including U of L students, are welcome to submit works for consideration in the exhibition. Works must be recent, they should be a drawing or be connected to drawing, but do not need to be created at the U of L Art Gallery events.

To be considered for the exhibition, drawings must be submitted unframed and on paper that fits the gallery’s stock frame sizes: 14” x 18” or 21.5” x 16” or 22” x 28” or 32” x 40” inches. Gallery staff will mat and frame the works and return the works in the mats.

Works are to be dropped off at the gallery on January 22, 2016 and accompanied by information for label copy. The exhibition will be curated by David Smith and Josephine Mills. The Drawing Series
Starting in January, 2016, the U of L Art Gallery will exhibit a selection of our outstanding holding of drawings, sketches, and unfinished works in two exhibitions: Works for the Drawing Bar, curated by Museum Studies intern Kaitlynn Smart, will run January 21 – March 17, 2016 in the Main Gallery; and Works in Progress, curated by Andrea Kremenik, will run January 8 – February 19, 2016 in the Helen Christou Gallery. As well, this year, our art + people = x series will focus on drawing and include an exhibition of works by local artists – Works from the Drawing Bar will be on display February 26 – April 1, 2016 in the Helen Christou Gallery.

Helen Christou Gallery

Selected from the U of L Art Collection, this exhibition features an array of artworks in various stages of creation. With sketchbooks to finished works and everything in between, the artworks on display include a range of pastel, pencil and charcoal drawings, ink prints, and watercolour sketches. Specific examples include the comprehensive sketchbooks of A.Y. Jackson and Illingworth Kerr, preliminary drawings by Jessie Ursenbach and Nicholas de Grandmaison, and deceivingly finished artworks by David Hockney and David Blackwood.

Continuing the long-running “art + people = x”, a series which connects artists and community members with the U of L Art Gallery’s extensive collection, this exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions and projects and will include a selection from our strong holding of drawings by Alberta, Canadian, and International artists.

Artists from the Lethbridge area will have an opportunity to view a selection of the U of L Art Gallery’s holdings of drawings and will create drawings in response on their own or at our monthly Thursday evening public program, The Drawing Bar. The exhibition will consist of a curated selection from submissions by local artists.
