Procession for the Sciences
September 13, 2019, 10:30 – 11 am
Grand Opening, Science and Academic Building, University of Lethbridge

Artist Bekk Wells will lead a procession across campus, ending in the new Science and Academic Building as part of the grand opening.

Procession for the Sciences is an event that aims to bring artists, scientists, and members of the general public together in a way that can present opportunities for new connections between disciplines. Through public spectacle, the project connects specialist languages that are normally isolated from each other. Participants in the procession carry pairs of banners depicting equations from various scientific fields, asserting the presence of mathematical language in an unusual context and creating an unexpected interruption into the public sphere. This is an artwork about relations: equations are a way to describe relations between measurable quantities; events are a way to promote relations between individuals and communities. The procession ties together the ephemerality of temporal events with the immateriality of mathematical constructs.

Bekk Wells has an MA in Art and Science from Central St Martins, London UK and a BSc in chemistry from the University of Lethbridge, where he also studied art. His recent works investigate experiences, phenomenology, information, and materials.
